Victor Davis Memorial Fund winners announced at Day 2 of Trials

News –

TORONTO – In what has become a humbling tradition at Trials, Swimming Canada has named the winners of the 2015 Victor Davis Awards.

The Victor Davis Memorial Fund was established in 1990, just one year after his tragic passing. A Guelph, Ont., native, Davis was a two-time world champion and represented Canada at two Olympic Games. At the Los Angeles 1984 Olympics, he won gold in the 200-m breaststroke and two silver in the 100-m breaststroke and 4×100-m medley relay. At the Seoul 1988 Olympics, Davis was part of the 4×100-m medley relay team that won bronze. During his career, Davis also held multiple world records to go along with 31 national titles.

Applicants for the Victor Davis Awards must have achieved a national qualifying time or better during the previous year, and intend to further their education while continuing to swim at a competitive level.

This year’s group of winners are:

  • From UVIC and Pacific Coast Swimming, Molly Gowans
  • From Halifax Trojan Aquatic Club, Jade Hannah
  • From C.N. St-Jérôme, Mary-Sophie Harvey
  • From the Edmonton Keyano Swim Club, Anders Klein
  • From the Kelowna Aqua Jets, Josh Zakala
  • From Académie de natation Montréal, Guillermo Ruben Cruz Zuniga

The Victor Davis Fund is in its 26th year and relies on donations, large or small, to carry on the legacy of one of Canada’s most cherished swimmers. We encourage members of the swimming community to contribute at www.swimming.ca/donations
