RIO – Brittany MacLean of Toronto and the men’s 4X100-m freestyle relay will join Penny Oleksiak in finals tonight after qualifying this afternoon in swimming action at the Olympic Games.

Oleksiak hopes to add a second medal in the women’s 100-m butterfly final after helping Canada to a thrilling bronze in women’s 4X100-m freestyle relay on Saturday. Just a reminder that on Saturday the 16-year-old Toronto swimmer was third in the 100 fly preliminaries and ranked fifth in the semis just before anchoring the relay to the podium.

On Sunday morning in the women’s 400-m freestyle, MacLean lowered her Canadian record to four minutes and 03.43 seconds finishing third in her heat and fifth overall. The top-eight advanced to tonight’s final.

‘’I was hoping to be around my best time in the prelims,’’ said MacLean. ‘’It was a great way for me to start the Games and I’m hoping to go faster tonight.’’

Katie Ledecky of the U.S. set a Games record and neared the world record clocking the fastest time at 3:58.71. Emily Overholt of West Vancouver, fifth in a gutsy 400-m IM on Saturday night, ranked 25th.

In the men’s 4X100 freestyle, the Canadians were an impressive fifth in 3:14.06. The Canadian swimmers were Santo Condorelli of Kenora, Ont., Yuri Kisil of Calgary, Markus Thormeyer of Tsawwassen, B.C., and Evan Van Moerkerke of Tillsonburg, Ont.

‘’It feel great,’’ said the 6’9’’ Van Moerkerke. ‘’There’s a lot more there. Each one of us has a couple of tenths we can shave off. The excitement tonight is going to be unreal. We’ll be a little more comfortable knowing what to expect.’’

Russia qualified first in 3:12.04 just ahead the U.S., Australia and France.

Also in action tonight for Canada are Kylie Masse of LaSalle, Ont., and Dominique Bouchard of North Bay, Ont., who ranked third and 12th for tonight’s 100-m backstroke semifinals. Masse clocked 59.07 just 0.01 seconds off her Canadian record set at the Olympic trials in April

Rachel Nicol of Lethbridge, Alta., swims the women’s 100-m breaststroke semifinal after ranking 11th. Kierra Smith of Kelowna, B.C., ranked 19th. The top-16 make the semis.

In the men’s 100-m backstroke Javier Acevedo of Scarborough, Ont., missed a berth in the semis by one spot ranking 17th.

Tonight’s evening session gets underway at 9 p.m. (EDT)
