Canadian swimmers collect two medals to open Arena Pro Swim Series event

INDIANAPOLIS – Quadruple Olympic medallist Penny Oleksiak was nudged off the podium but Canadians still snared two medals on Thursday at the second stop on the Arena Pro Swim Series circuit.

 

In the women’s 200-m breaststroke, Mary-Sophie Harvey of Montreal roared back from sixth spot at the last turn to win the silver medal in two minutes and 26.60 seconds. Chloe Tutton of Wales dominated the race clocking 2:23.89 for the victory. Melanie Margalis of the U.S. was third in 2:26.80.

Canada’s second medal came in the women’s 100-m butterfly with Rebecca Smith of Red Deer, Alta., earning the bronze in 58.98. Kelsi Worrell of the U.S. was the victor in 58.10 and her compatriot Kendyl Stewart second in 58.32. Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., was sixth in 59.43.

There were also two Canadians in the women’s 100-m freestyle final but both just missed the podium. Penny Oleksiak of Toronto, the Olympic champ in the event, was fourth in 54.69 and Sandrine Mainville of Montreal fifth in 54.84.

Mallory Comerford of the U.S.  took the gold in 53.91, Menghui Zhu of China second in 53.93 and Federica Pellegrini of Italy third in 54.47.

Competition continues through to Saturday.
