Knelson notches two wins at 2017 Speedo Eastern Championships

ETOBICOKE, Ont. – Faith Knelson of Victoria made her ‘’western’’ presence felt at the 2017 Speedo Eastern Championships swimming competition on Friday with golden performances in the 100-m freestyle and 100-m breaststroke.

The double gold performance brings Knelson’s medal count in the girls 13 and over age group to three gold. She also won the 200-m breaststroke on Thursday on the first day of competition.

Other winners in the age group were Madison Broad of Chatham, Ont., in the 50-m backstroke, Jade Hannah of Victoria in the 50-m butterfly and Shannon Russell of Burlington, Ont., in the 400-m individual medley. It was a second gold for Hannah.

In the girls 16 and over group, winners were MacKenzie Padington of Victoria in the 100-m freestyle, Katrina Brathwaite of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the 100-m breaststroke and Mabel Zavaros of Oakville, Ont., in the 400-m IM.  Padington is also up to three gold.

It was a Quebec sweep in the boys 17 and over: Antoine Bernard-Lalonde of Montreal took the 100-m freestyle, Connor Isings of Pointe-Claire the 100-m breaststroke and Marshall Dubord of Montreal the 400-m IM.

In the boys 14 and over winners were Justin Konik of Etobicoke in the 100-m freestyle, William Marois of St-Eustache, Que., in the 50-m backstroke, Owen Huang of Markham, Ont., in the 100-m breaststroke, Frederick Leroux of Repentigny, Que., in the 50-m butterfly and Brodie Young of New Westminster, B.C., in the 400-m IM.

Pointe-Claire Swim Club leads the combined team standings with 782.5 points followed by Island Swimming from Victoria at 499 and Montreal’s Club CAMO at 495.

Competition continues through to Sunday at the Etobicoke Olympium. Preliminaries are at 9 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m.
