Thormeyer wins 50-m backstroke and freestyle at Pro Swim event

SANTA CLARA, California – Markus Thormeyer of Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre-Vancouver won the 50-m freestyle and 50-m backstroke shootout races on Sunday to conclude the fifth stop on the Pro Swim series circuit.

Penny Oleksiak of Toronto and Sarah Darcel of Victoria also posted victories.

The 50-m shootout races were held in playoff style format with the top-four from the eight- swimmer finalists race advancing to the semis and the top-two to the final.

In the men’s 50-m freestyle, Thormeyer defeated Tate Jackson of the U.S. in the final two clocking 22.97 to 23.13 for Jackson.  Oleksandr Loginov of Toronto reached the semifinal and was fourth in 24.33.

In the men’s 50-m backstroke, Thormeyer and Ryosuke Irie of Japan tied in the final as both clocked 25.68. Javier Acevedo of Ajax, Ont., was fourth in the semi in 25.67.

Oleksiak earned her victory in the women’s 50-m butterfly shootout clocking 26.06 to 26.32 for Farida Osman of Egypt.

Darcel placed first in the women’s 200-m mystery medley in 2:16.92. Kim Williams of the U.S. was second in 2:19.51 and Hermosillo Gonzales of Mexico third in 2:19.93.

Third places finishes were earned by world champion Kylie Masse of Windsor, Ont., in the 50-m backstroke and Alexandre Perreault of Ottawa in the men’s 50-m butterfly.

Kennedy Goss of Toronto was fourth in the 400-m freestyle in 4:13.96 and Acevedo fourth in the 200-m mystery medley.

On Saturday, Masse was second in the 100-m backstroke and Oleksiak third in the 100-m freestyle.
