WINNIPEG – Jade Hannah of Victoria, Katrina Bellio of Etobicoke, Ont., Eli Wall of Toronto and Cole Pratt of Calgary all earned a second victory on Friday at the 2019 Canadian Swimming Championships.

The 17-year-old Hannah took the women’s 100-m backstroke in 1:00.19 after placing first in Thursday’s 200 back. Regan Rathwell of Ottawa was second in 1:02.04 and Asia Minnes of Montreal was third in 1:02.52.

Bellio, the 800 freestyle winner Thursday, was first in the 400-m individual medley in 4:48.89. Aela Janvier of Pointe-Claire, Que., took the silver in 4:51.91 and Summer McIntosh of Etobicoke was third in 4:52.76.

Other winners in women’s competition were Brooklyn Douthwright of Moncton, N.B., in the 200-m freestyle in 2:00.05, Marie-Lou Lapointe of St-Eustache in the 50-m butterfly in 27.22 and Olympian Rachel Nicol of Lethbridge, Alta., in the 50-m breaststroke in 31.30.

“I was really happy with that swim,” said Douthwright, 16. “My goal was to get as close to two minutes flat as I could. I knew I could go faster after prelims and getting a chance to race these girls in a really close race pushed me to get where I wanted.”

On the men’ side, Pratt took the 100 back in 55.86 with Graysen Bernard of Toronto second in 56.83 and Tayden De Pol of Nanaimo, B.C., third in 56.92.

Wall, the 200 breaststroke winner Thursday, won the 50 breast in 28.55 edging Jonathan Naisby of Sherbrooke, Que., by 0.01 seconds. Brendan Fitzpatrick of Victoria was third in 28.77.

Other men’s winners were Ruslan Gaziev of Winnipeg in the 200 free in 1:49.96, Alexandre Perreault of Ottawa in the 50 fly in 24.08 and Brodie Young of Vancouver in the 400 IM in a personal best 4:21.98.

“That was my best by three seconds so that’s pretty good,” said Young. “I wasn’ feeling so well after prelims but I improved in warm-up and by the time I got on the blocks for the final I was ready.”

Canada’s top para-swimmers are also at the competition. Winners included Aly Van Wyck-Smart of Toronto in the 200 free in 5:26.51, Camille Bérubé of Gatineau, Que., in the 50 fly in 38.71, Shelby Newkirk of Saskatoon in the 100 back in 1:21.81 and Tammy Cunnington of Red Deer, Alta., in the 50 breast in 1:12.55.

For the para-men winners were, Nicholas Bennett of Parksville, B.C., in the 200 free in 1:58.40, Nicolas-Guy Turbide of Quebec City in the 100 backstroke in 1:00.91 and Jacob Brayshaw of Penticton B.C., in the 50 breast.

“I thought my race went pretty well considering I’m still in training,” said Bennett, 15. “I‘m just glad I could bring it back at the end but the last five metres were really tough.”

Edmonton Keyano led by world championship relay medallist Emma O’Croinin won the 4X100-m mixed medley relay.

In the club standings, Neptune Natation of St-Jerôme-Montreal is first with 503 points, Edmonton Keyano is second at 403 and Pointe-Claire Swim Club third at 392.

Competition continues through to Sunday at the Pan Am Pool.
