Taylor: Bio

  • Coming back from a wrist injury, she helped the 4x100m freestyle relay team finish seventh at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. She also swam the preliminary heat of the mixed 4x100m freestyle and helped the team qualify for the final, where Canada finished in fourth position.
  • At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Ruck finished sixth in the 200m backstroke and ninth in the 100m backstroke. Ruck also swam in the preliminaries of the women’s 4x100m freestyle which won silver and swam the backstroke portion in the preliminary session with the 4x100m medley relay which went on to win bronze.
  • At her first Olympic Games in 2016, Ruck competed in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays where she won bronze in addition to two Canadian records in her two events.
  • At the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Ruck was a member of the 4x100m freestyle relay that won silver, as well as the 4x200m freestyle that won bronze and the 4x100m mixed medley that finished 11th  . She also swam the preliminaries of the 4x100m freestyle relay which went on to win silver in the final. Individually, Ruck placed 6th in the 200m freestyle and 17th in the 100m backstroke.
  • At the 2019 FINA World Championships in Gwangju, she was part of the women’s teams that won bronze and broke the Canadian record in the 4 x 100m and 4 x 200m freestyle relays. She also participated in the preliminaries of the women’s 4 x 100m medley relay, in which the Canadian team won bronze. In the individual events, she finished fourth in the 100m backstroke and fifth in the 100m freestyle and 200m backstroke.
  • Taylor Ruck won eight medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, matching the total won by Canadian Ralph Hutton (1966) and Australians Emily Seebohm (2010) and Susie O’Neill (1998), for the most of medals won in one edition.
  • Ruck won gold and lowered the Commonwealth record in the 200m freestyle. She also won silver and lowered the Canadian record in the 50m freestyle.
  • At the same competition, she won silver in the 200m backstroke and two bronze medals in the 100m backstroke and 100m freestyle. Ruck was also a member of the 4x100m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle and 4x100m medley relay teams, all of which won silver medals.
  • At the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships in Tokyo, Taylor Ruck became the first Canadian to win five medals at the Pan Pacific Championships.
  • Ruck won gold and lowered the Pan Pacific and Commonwealth Championships record in the 200m freestyle.
  • At the same meet, Ruck also won the silver medal in the 200m backstroke and the bronze medal in the 100m freestyle with a new personal best time. She also participated in the 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle relays which won bronze medals.
  • Ruck won silver in the 100m and 200m backstroke at the 2022 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials. She also won bronze in the 100m and 200m freestyle. His performances earned him a spot on the 2022 FINA World Championships team in Budapest.
  • Ruck was provisionally named to the 2020 Olympic team for her performances in 2019. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Trials, Ruck won silver in the 100m and 200m backstroke.
  • At the 2022 NCAA Swimming Championships, Ruck won gold in the 200-yard freestyle and 800-yard freestyle relay, while also taking silver in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
  • At the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials, Ruck won gold in the 100m freestyle and silver in the 200m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 200m backstroke to qualify for the 2019 FINA World Championships team.
  • At the 2018 Canadian Swimming Trials in Edmonton, Ruck won gold in the 200m freestyle.
  • At the 2017 FINA World Junior Championships in Indianapolis, Ruck won five medals in relay events, including the 4x100m medley and freestyle relays and the 4×200 freestyle, as well as the mixed 4×100 freestyle and medley relays.
  • At the same meet, Ruck won gold in the 200 freestyle and silver in the 100 backstroke.
  • With 13 total medals, Ruck is now the most decorated athlete at the World Junior Championships.
  • At the 2017 Canadian Junior Championships, Ruck won the gold medal in the 200m backstroke lowering the Canadian age group (15-17) record.
  • At the 13th World Swimming Championships (25m) in Windsor, Ontario, in 2016, Ruck competed in six events including four relays. Individually, she won the bronze medal in the 200m freestyle, setting a new Canadian record of 1:52.50. She also finished 14th in the 400m freestyle with a personal best time.
  • During that same competition, she competed in the 4x50m freestyle and 4x200m freestyle, winning the gold medal and setting new Canadian records. She also swam in the preliminary rounds of the 4x100m medley relay, winning the silver medal. Ultimately, she competed in the 4x100m freestyle disqualified.
  • During the 2016 Mare Nostrum Tour in Monte Carlo, Ruck won silver in the 400m freestyle.
  • At the 2016 Arena Pro Series in Charlotte, Ruck took silver in the 200 freestyle.
  • Taylor was born in Kelowna, British Columbia. Her family moved to Scottsdale, Arizona because of her father’s job when she was only 10 months old.
  • At the 2016 Olympic and Para-swimming Trials in Toronto, Ruck won silver in the 400m freestyle. She earned her spot on the team with her 5th place finish in the 200m freestyle as a relay swimmer.
  • At the 2015 FINA Junior Championships, she won 3 gold medals (100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, mixed 4x100m freestyle relay). Then aged 15, she established a Canadian 15-17 year old record in the 100m freestyle.
  • At this same competition, she was the 4th runner in the 4x200m who won the silver medal. She also won bronze in the 200m backstroke and the 4x100m freestyle relay.
  • In 2015, Taylor was named the best young swimmer of the year.
  • At the 2015 US Junior National Championships , she won gold in the 200m and 400m freestyles, bronze in the 800m freestyle, and finished 5th in the 50m freestyle.
  • His father, Colin Ruck, played in the Western Hockey League from 1987 to 1991.
  • Ruck is inspired by Missy Franklin, another swimmer with Canadian roots, for her work ethic and positive attitude.
