Another impressive performance for Winnipeg’s Mackenzie Glover

News –

DUBAI, UAE – Any doubts about her 200-m backstroke were put to rest on Friday for Winnipeg’s MacKenzie Glover as she produced a personal best time to place fifth at the last stop on the FINA World Cup short course swimming circuit.

Two-time Olympic champion Emily Seebhom of Australia took the gold in two minutes and 06.94 seconds followed by Katinka Hosszu of Hungary in second at 2:07.13 and Daryna Zevina of Ukraine in third at 2:11.07.

Glover, a double finalist at the previous stop in Doha, Qatar earlier this week, clocked 2:12.62 bettering her time from Doha by three seconds.

‘’I haven’t gone a best time in 200 back in over a year and to do it this early in the season is a huge confidence booster,’’ said Glover, 17. ‘’ I’ve been working a lot on being more relaxed at the beginning of the race so that I can finish strong and I think I did a really good job of implementing that in the race tonight.’’

The heartbreak of the day belongs to Caroline Lapierre-Lemire of Pointe-Claire, Que., who placed ninth in the 50-m freestyle preliminaries missing a berth in the final by 0.01 seconds.  She clocked 25.94 while Anna Koralova of the Czech Republic moved on with a 25.93.

‘’I was pleased to see my time at 25 seconds but being fourth in my heat, I knew it wasn’t going to be enough,’’ said Lapierre-Lemire. ‘’But I didn’t expect to be that close so that’s a little frustrating.  After the video analysis I saw that I corrected errors I made in Doha so overall I’m pleased with my progress.’’

Canada has fielded a young seven-member team for the last two World Cup stops in Doha and Dubai.

Competition ends Saturday.
