Two victories, Canadian record for Nicolas-Guy Turbide at 2015 U.S. Paralympics Swimming Open

BISMARCK, North Dakota – Visually impaired swimmer Nicolas Guy-Turbide of Quebec City won two gold medals on Thursday and broke a Canadian record to open the 2015 U.S. Paralympics Swimming Open competition.

Turbide, who competes in the S13 disability category took first spot in both the 400-m freestyle and the 50-m backstroke. It was in the 50-m backsroke that he lowered his Canadian mark which is an Americas record as well.

Other victors for Canada on Friday included, Aurélie Rivard of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., in the S10 400-m freestyle, Sarah Mehain of Vernon, B.C., in the S7 50-m breaststroke and Samantha Ryan of Saskatoon in th e 100-m butterfly for the women. For the men,  Riley McLean of Vernon, B.C., in the S4 200-m freestyle, Jean-Michel Lavalliere of Quebec City in the S7 400-m freestyle and Adam Purdy of London, Ont., in the S6 50-m backstroke.

McLean, Danial Murphy of Halifax, Kirstie Kasko of Okotoks, Alta.,and  Morgan Bird of Calgary were double individual medallists on the day.

Kasko also lowered her national record in the 50-m backstroke as did Valérie Drapeau of Montreal in the S5 200-m breaststroke.

Canadian quartets won both 4X100-m freestyle relays.
