Katerine Savard reaches three finals at FINA World Cup

SINGAPORE – Olympic medallist Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., placed fourth in the 50-m butterfly in one her three finals on Saturday to conclude the seventh stop on the FINA World Cup swimming circuit.

Savard came within 0.10 seconds of the podium in the 50 fly clocking 26.01 seconds. Jeanette Ottesen of Denmark won the gold medal in 25.11, Kelsi Worrell of the U.S. was second in 25.45 and Emily Seebohm of Australia third in 25.91.

In her other finals Saturday, Savard was sixth in both the 100-m individual medley and the 100-m freestyle. On Friday, Savard won the bronze medal in the 100-m butterfly.

Hilary Caldwell of the Swimming Canada High Performance Centre-Victoria, the Olympic bronze medallist in the 200-m backstroke in Rio, took fifth spot in the 100-m backstroke. The race was won by triple Olympic champion Katinka Hosszu of Hungary.

‘’This was my first competition since the Olympics and it was as hard as expected,’’ said Caldwell. ‘’I’m pleased to get off to a good start here especially after the long travel. I expect things will improve at the next World Cups.’’

In the women’s 100-m freestyle, also won by Ottesen, Michelle Williams of the HPC-Ontario was fifth just ahead of Savard.  Savard (4×200-m) and Williams (4×100) earned their Rio medals in freestyle relay action.

‘’These are the first World Cups I’ve ever attended,’’ said Williams. ‘’To have my first races of a new season on the international stage is just really cool. It’s kind of a see where I am at and sharpen up my skills event.’’

The Canadians are tuning up for the FINA World Swimming Championships set for December 6-11 in Windsor, Ont.

‘’To swim against some of the best in the world is a great set-up for the worlds. It’s great to see what the best are doing and be able to compare myself as I prepare.’’

Other Canadian finalists were Rachel Nicol of Lethbridge, Alta., seventh in the 50-m breaststroke and eighth in the 200-m breaststroke and Olivia Anderson of Mississauga, Ont., eighth in the 400-m freestyle.

The Singapore stop launched the third and final FINA/airweave Swimming World Cup cluster with three stops in Asia over a 9-day period. Nine Canadian swimmers overall will compete. 

The next World Cup stop  is in Tokyo Tuesday and Wednesday.
