Golden sweep in breaststroke for Knelson at 2017 Speedo Eastern Championships

ETOBICOKE, Ont. – Faith Knelson of Victoria completed a golden sweep in the breaststroke with a victory in the 50-m race on Saturday at the 2017 Speedo Eastern Championships swimming competition.

With the win Knelson is up to four individual gold this week. Her Island Swimming Club teammates Jade Hannah and Mackenzie Padington also reached the four gold mark on Saturday.

In the girls 13 and over age group, Hannah posted victories in the 100-m butterfly and 200-m backstroke on Saturday. She also won the 50-m fly on Friday and the 100-m back on Thursday.

Other winners in the age group were Shannon Russell of Burlington, Ont., in the 400-m freestyle, and Knelson in the 50-m breaststroke. Knelson also has victories so far this week in the 100-m and 200-m breaststrokes and 100-m freestyle.

Padington collected her fourth gold in the 16 and over age group placing first in the 400-m freestyle. She also won the 100-m and 200-m freestyles and the 200-m breaststroke.

Also with wins were Alicia Arcand of St-Jérôme, Que., and Madison Broad of Chatham, Ont., in the 200-m backstroke.

In boys competition winners in the 17 and over age group were: Etienne Paquin-Foisy of Longueuil, Que., in the 400-m freestyle, Owen Daly of Montreal in the 100-m butterfly and William Marois of St-Eustache, Que., in the 200-m backstroke.

In the 14 and over races winners were: Richie Stokes of Etobicoke in the 400-m freestyle, Joshua Liendo of North York, Ont., in the 100-m butterfly, Alexander Milanovich of Etobicoke in the 50-m breaststroke and Sehajvir Singh of New Westminster, B.C., in the 200-m backstroke.

In the 4X100-m mixed medley relay, Toronto Swim Club won the gold medal.

In the combined team standings, Pointe-Claire Swim Club leads with 1,291.5 points, Montreal’s Club CAMO is second at 745 and Victoria’s Island Swimming third at 737.

Competition ends Sunday at the Etobicoke Olympium. Preliminaries are at 9 a.m. and finals at 5 p.m.
