BUDAPEST, Hungary – Canada’s 4×100-metre mixed freestyle relay will add to Canada’s busy night in tonight’s finals at the FINA World Championships in Budapest after qualifying third.

Canada has seven swims tonight, including four finals and three semifinals.

The relay team of Yuri Kisil, Markus Thormeyer, Sandrine Mainville and Chantal Van Landeghem swam the relay in 3 minutes 25.07 seconds, behind only the Netherlands and the United States.

“I think everyone did their part, we had great splits from everyone. Getting in third is all we can really ask for,” said Kisil, of the High Performance Centre – Vancouver. “We’re all good friends, and we all really trust each other to swim fast.”

Kisil, Mainville and Van Landeghem helped Canada take bronze in the event’s debut in 2015.

“Every time I do a relay I really appreciate it because it’s so much fun to have people behind you cheering and feel their energy,” said HPC – Ontario swimmer Mainville. “We’ve known each other for a long time and we just want to be fast and have fun together.”

The relay and four 50-m swimmers will be joining Kylie Masse, Hilary Caldwell and Penny Oleksiak in tonight’s session.

Masse and Caldwell will be racing in the 200-m backstroke final. On Friday, Masse set a Canadian record and is entered second after Australian Emily Seebohm. Caldwell is going in eighth.

Oleksiak also set a Canadian record on Friday. She is going into the 50-m butterfly ranked fourth.

Meanwhile, Michelle Toro sprinted into tonight’s 50-metre freestyle semifinals in sixth after a blistering best time of 24.64 in her heat.

“I’m very happy with that swim. It’s pretty cool, my goal coming in was to go a best time in the morning,” said the 26-year-old from Toronto. “My goal tonight is to make the final, and go a little bit faster. I’m really chasing that Canadian record.”

Toro is hunting HPC – Ontario teammate Van Landeghem’s national mark of 24.39, set in 2015.

“I also want to have fun with it, take in the crowd and put up another good swim.”

Mainville also qualified for the 50-m freestyle semifinals. The 25-year-old from Boucherville, Que., is going in 15^th after a 24.99.

Javier Acevedo, of Scarborough, Ont., advanced to the 50-m backstroke semifinals in a personal best 25.16, just 0.03 off the Canadian record set by Russell Wood in 2015. Acevedo is going into tonight’s semifinals in 15^th place.

“It felt like the best swim I’ve had this week honestly,” he said. “It felt good, I think I can improve on that and work on the last 10 metres and improve my rate and I should be good.”

Rachel Nicol of Lethbridge, Alta., was the third Canadian to qualify 15^th into a semifinal this morning. Nicol finished her 50-m breaststroke in 31.02.

“I made it back so hopefully I’ll be faster tonight,” said Nicol, who went 30.84 at Vancouver’s Mel Zajac International in May. “The 50 is more exciting and aggressive. A best time would be wonderful tonight, hopefully in this kind of environment I’m able to go a little faster but we’ll see.”

The FINA World Championships run through Sunday. Finals begin at 11:30 am ET each day and will be streamed live by CBC in English at http://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/summer/aquatics and in French on Radio-Canada Sports Facebook Live.
