MONTREAL – Yuri Kisil of Calgary and Markus Thormeyer of Delta, B.C. showed why they are world championship medallists after posting victories Friday to open the Canadian Swimming Championships at the Olympic Park Sport Centre.

In the men’s 50-m freestyle, Kisil clocked a personal best 22.11 seconds for the victory with Mehdi Ayoubi of Montreal second in 22.35 and Scott McGillivray of Toronto third in 22.85.

‘’I was happy with the race,’’ said Kisil, who helped Canada to bronze with Thormeyer in the 4X100-m mixed freestyle relay at the worlds which concluded this past weekend in Budapest.

‘’My coach said I was a bit slow off the dive but I’m pleased that I was able to step it up from worlds. That’s my goal here this weekend.’’

In the men’s 200-m backstroke, Thormeyer saved his best on the last length to surge to victory in 1:59.76. Robert Hill of North Vancouver was second in 2:00.30 and Josiah Binnema of Vancouver third in 2:00.74.

Other winners in men’s competition were Peter Brothers of Victoria in the 1500-m freestyle and Ryan Telford of Ajax, Ont., in the 200-m breaststroke.

In women’s competition, the winners were Mackenzie Padington of Victoria in the 800-m freestyle, Kennedy Goss of Toronto in the 200-m backstroke, Ariane Mainville of Montreal in the 50-m free and Kelsey Wog of Winnipeg in the 200-m breaststroke.

‘’I wanted to make sure I was relaxed the entire race,’’ said Mainville. ‘’That’s the key in the freestyle because if you panic that’s when you get in trouble. I hope I can do the same in the 100 but I know it won’t be easy.’’

In para-swimming the winners were Morgan Bird of Calgary and Alexander Elliot of Kitchener, Ont., in the 50-m freestyles and Zach Zona of Waterford, Ont., in the 400-m freestyle.

‘’I was about a second off my time in Rio (last year at the Paralympics)  so that was a bit disappointing,’’ said Elliot, tuning up for the para-swimming worlds next month in Mexico. ‘’But for this time of the year I’m pretty happy with it. I’m still in hard training for the worlds.’’

Competition continues through to Monday.
