MONTREAL- Katerine Savard of Pont-Rouge, Que., won two gold medals on Saturday at the 2017 Canadian Swimming Championships.

Savard, a bronze medallist in the 4X200 freestyle relay last year at the Rio Olympics, posted wins in the women’s 200-m freestyle and 50-m butterfly clocking 1:57.67 and 26.67.

Other winners in women’s competition were Alexia Zevnik of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the 100-m backstroke, Sarah Darcel of Victoria in the 400-m individual medley and Faith Knelson of Victoria in the 50-m breaststroke.

“That was a very big weight lifted off my shoulders,” said Zevnik. “It’s been a long time that my goal was to break the minute barrier. It’s an exciting way to head into the World University Games (later this month).”

In men’s competition, Markus Thormeyer of Delta, B.C., collected his second gold of the meet winning the 100-m back in 54.87. Josiah Binnema of Vancouver followed in 56.55 and Anders Klein of Edmonton was third in 56.67.

“I was pretty happy with the race,” said Thormeyer, a bronze medallist in the 4X100-m mixed relay at the world championships last week. “There hasn’t been much turnaround time since worlds so to post these results is very satisfying.”

Other winners in the men’s races included were Jeremy Bagshaw of Victoria in the 200-m free, Tristan Cote of Etobicoke, Ont., in the 400 IM and Kaelen Freund of Lethbridge, Alta., in the 50-m breaststroke.

In Para swimming the winners for the women included Justine Morrier of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., in the 200 free, Tammy Cunnington of Red Deer, Alta., in the 50 fly and Abi Tripp of Kingston, Ont., in the 100 back.

In the Para swimming men the victors included Gord Michie of St. Thomas, Ont., in the 200 free and Nicolas Turbide of Quebec City in the 100 back.

‘’My time was good in the first 50-metres,’’ said Turbide, preparing for the Para swimming world championships next month in Mexico. ‘’There’s still a lot of work to do in the back end of the race.’’

Competition continues through to Monday.
