MONTREAL – Sarah Darcel’s preparations for the World University Games appear to be on track. The Victoria swimmer won the gold medal Sunday in the women’s 200-m individual medley at the 2017 Canadian Swimming Championships.

She clocked two minutes and 12.32 seconds on Sunday upsetting world championship and Olympic team member Erika Seltenreich-Hodgson of Ottawa, second in 2:13.89. Kelsey Wog of Winnipeg was third in 2:15.20.

‘’The time for me was overall pretty good and I’m happy to get the win,’’ said Darcel, the 400 IM winner on Saturday.  ‘’I feel confident I can progress even more from this event at the Games.’’

Kennedy Goss of Toronto also added a second win placing first in the 400-m freestyle. Other winners in women’s competition were Ingrid Wilm of Vancouver in the 50-m backstroke and Mabel Zavaros of Oakville, Ont., in the 100-m butterfly.

For her part, Zavaros is tuning up for the world junior championships, also later this month.

‘’This was definitely a good set up for me for the junior worlds,’’ said Zavaros. ‘’But I definitely plan to go a lot faster.’’

In men’s competition, Jeremy Bagshaw of Victoria snared a second gold with his 400 free victory. Also with gold were Mack Darragh of Oakville in the 200 IM, Tim Zeng of North Vancouver in the 50 back and Josiah Binnema of Vancouver in the 100 fly.

‘’I’m swimming more events here than usual and I think the fatigue showed tonight,’’ said Binnema, who competed at the worlds earlier this month and is also headed to the World University Games. ‘’My first split was quite off my usual time.’’

The UBC Dolphins and Pointe-Claire Swim Club won the 4X100 freestyle relays.

In Para swimming, the winners were Jonathan Dieleman of Telkwa, B.C., in the 150-m IM, Katarina Roxon of Stephenville, N.L., and Gordie Michie of St. Thomas, Ont., in the 200 IM and Justine Morrier of St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., and Alexander Elliot of Kitchener, Ont., in the 100-m fly.

‘’The fly was much more faster than in prelims,’’ said Michie. ‘’The other strokes were OK. The time was under 2:20 (2:19.12) which is the most important. That time should get me into a final at worlds.’’

UBC leads the overall club standings with 848 points followed by the Oakville Aquatic Club at 816 and Island Swimming from Victoria at 718.
