Van Dyk a double winner at the 2018 Speedo Eastern Swimming Championships

WINDSOR, Ont. – EmmaGrace Van Dyk of St-Catherines, Ont., won gold in the women’s Para-swimming 100-m freestyle and 100-m breaststroke on Friday at the 2018 Speedo Eastern Swimming Championships at the Windsor International Aquatic and Training Centre.

Van Dyk took gold in the 100-m freestyle in a time of 1:13.21 and again in the 100-m breaststroke in 1:37.76.

“I thought my races were really good” said Van Dyk. “I tried really hard to make those times.”

On the men’s Para-swimming side, the winners were Alexander Elliots, of Waterloo, Ont., in the mens’ 100-m freestyle in 57.66, and Gord Michie, of St-Thomas, Ont., in the 100-m breaststroke in 1:12.09.

In the girls’ 13-15 age group, Brooklyn Douthwright, of Riverview, N.B., won her second gold medal of the competition in the 100-m freestyle with a time of 57.88.

Other winners in the women’s 13-15 age group were Asia Minnes of Vernon, B.C., in the 100-m breaststroke, and Katrina Bellio, of Etobicoke, Ont., in the 400-m individual medley.

In the women’s 16 and over age group the winners were Aleksa Gold of Toronto, in the 100-m freestyle, and Katarina Brathwaite of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the 100-m breaststroke, and the 400-m individual medley.

In the women’s 13 and over age group the winners were Maddie McDonald in the 50-m backstroke and Genevieve Sasseville in the 50-m butterfly.

Joshua Liendo, this year’s winner of the Jeno Tihanyi Bursary, clocked 52.46 for a victory in the men’s 100-m freestyle.

“It felt pretty good,” said Liendo, a member of the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships and Youth Olympic Games team. “It wasn’t as fast as I went yesterday in the relay, but it was a decent race.”

Other winners in the men’s 14-16 age group were Alexander Milanovich of Etobicoke, Ont, in the 100-m breaststroke, and Jacob Gallant of Fredericton, N.B., in the 400-m individual medley.

“I felt pretty confident with my race,” said Milanovich, also a member of the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships and Youth Olympic Games team. “I had a really great race last week, but I’m happy with this.”

The winners in the men’s 17 and over age group were Spencer Bougie of Pointe-Claire, Que., in the 100-m freestyle, Graeme Aylward, of Milton, Ont., in the 100-m breaststroke, and William Marois of St-Eustache, Que., in the 400-m individual medley.

In the men’s 14 and over age group, the winners were Loïc St-Martin in the 50-m backstroke and Joshua Liendo in the 50-m butterfly.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
