Herbert ends 2018 Speedo Western Nationals with six gold

VICTORIA – Bailey Herbert of Langley, B.C., collected two more victories in the girls 13-15 age group on Sunday to finish the 2018 Speedo Western Nationals swimming competition with a meet-high six individual gold.

The 15-year-old Herbert posted wins in the 200-m butterfly in 2:17.89 and the 200-m individual medley in 2:18.52. She also won the 200-m breaststroke on Thursday, the 100-m breaststroke and 400-m IM on Friday and the 100 fly on Saturday.

Other winners Sunday in the age group were Oksana Chaput of Winnipeg in the 50-m freestyle and Sophie Lorette of Victoria in the 1500-m freestyle.

Both Cole Pratt of Calgary and Avery Wiseman of Drayton Valley, Alta., were five-time winners.

In the boys 14-16, Pratt took the 200-m IM in 2:05.28 finishing six seconds ahead of his closest pursuer. Also with wins were Keir Ogilvie of Victoria in the 200-m butterfly, Tyler Wall of Penticton, B.C., in the 50-m freestyle, and Michael McGillivray of Regina in the 800-m freestyle.

Wiseman also earned gold number-five in the 200-m IM in 2:18.06 in the women’s 16 and over group. Marit Anderson of Calgary completed a golden sweep of the two distance freestyles winning the 1500, Josie Field of Langley took the 200 fly and Kyla Leibel of Red Deer, Alta., was the 50-m freestyle victor.

‘’It wasn’t my best but better than last week at nationals,’’ said Field. ‘’We’ve been training super hard and I’m feeling the effects of two meets in consecutive weeks.’’

Josh Zakala of Victoria posted an impressive double in the men’s 17 and over with back-to-back victories in the 200-m IM and the 800-m freestyle. He concludes the meet with three gold.

Nicolaas Dekker of Richmond, B.C., earned his third gold in the 200-m butterfly and veteran Kyle Troskot of Kamloops took the 50-m freestyle.

‘’I was a little sluggish,’’ said Troskot. ‘’This has been more of a training meet for me. But I really wanted to win that final race.’’

In para swimming, Amber Thomas of Drayton Valley and Connor Bissett of Whitecourt, Alta., were the 200-IM winners.

Cascade Swim Club from Calgary took top spot in the overall team standings. The University of Calgary was second and Victoria’s Island Swimming third.
