LIGNANO SIBBIADORO, Italy – Tammy Cunnington of Red Deer, Alta., won the silver medal in the women’s 50-m breaststroke on Friday to highlight Canadian performances at the fourth stop on the Para swimming World Series circuit.

Patricia Pereira Dos Santos of Brazil took the gold. Cunnington ranked second in one minute and 20.60 seconds. Angela Procida of Italy was third.

The races on the World Series circuit are multiclass therefore the ranking is based on which swimmer is closest to the world record in their disability category.

Tess Routliffe of Caledon, Ont., was in two finals Friday placing seventh in the women’s 200-m individual medley in 3:08.66 and eighth in the 100-m breaststroke in 1:40.95.

‘’My prelim times for both races were the fastest I’ve been since the Rio Paralympics (in 2016),’’ said Routliffe. ‘’It was a great way to start to day but there wasn’t much break before the finals and I was pretty exhausted.’’

Cunnington was also sixth in the 50-m backstroke and Alec Elliott of Kitchener, Ont., was eighth in the men’s 200-m IM.

In youth competition, Sabrina Duchesne of Quebec City was seventh in the women’s 200-m IM and Danielle Dorris of Moncton, N.B., eighth in the 100-m breaststroke.

‘’We have a group of four up and coming females in the NextGen, and I’ve been impressed how they have been able to focus on preparing themselves,’’ said Swimming Canada’s NextGen coach Michel Bérubé.  ‘’They were good races with many second swims at a well attended international meet.  It’s also great for them to watch and observe our senior team athletes.’’

Canadian records were set by Jonathan Dieleman of Vancouver in the men’s SB4 disability category 100-m breaststroke clocking 2:04.89 and Angela Marina of in the women’s S14 200-m IM in 2:38.11.
