HANGZHOU, China – Canadians completed their mission to the 14th FINA World Championships (25m) in Hangzhou by qualifying for the final in the women’s 4×100-metre medley relay.

The team of Ingrid Wilm, Sophie Angus, Haley Black and Aela Janvier finished seventh at the Hangzhou Olympic and International Expo Centre with a time of 3:58.04.

The medley relay capped a solid week for Black, a 22-year-old native of Prince George, B.C., who trains at Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre – Vancouver. Earlier in the meet, Black set a Canadian record in the 50m butterfly with a time of 25.43 and qualified for the final, where she finished eighth. Black also earned a ninth-place finish the 100m fly (56.91), just missing the final after advancing to the semifinal.

Canadian head coach Martyn Wilby said Black’s performance was “part of her maturation process.”

“It’s too bad she did not get to the final ….but it is part of the learning curve when you get to the international level,” Wilby said.

Black said that “overall” she was pleased with her showing in the 100 fly despite just missing out on the final.

“I can’t say that I did not go for it. I did and I gave it everything I have,” she said.

Black, a three-time NCAA all-American at Auburn University, was also a member of the 4×50 medley relay team that finished in 10th spot with a time of 1:49.56. Wilm, Angus and Janvier were also members of the team.

Wilm, a native of Norwich, U.K. who resides in Calgary, was 28th in the 100-m back (59.31) and 21st in the 50m back (27.25).

Angus, who is not attached to any Canadian club,  joined Wilm, Alex Perreault and Alex Loginov to finish 17th in the 4×50 mixed medley relay (1:43.81).

Loginov, a Toronto native who trains in Vancouver, set a personal best time in the men’s 50m free with an effort of 22.43 seconds. He finished 50th in the field of 92 swimmers.

Perreault, of Ottawa, was 37th in the 100 fly. His time of 53.40 was just off his personal best of 53.37.

Janvier earned an 18th place showing in the 200 back (2:09.97) and was 21st in the 200 IM (2:13.80).
