Golden finish for Oleksiak and Ruck at Mare Nostrum Tour

BARCELONA – Canadians Penny Oleksiak and Taylor Ruck won gold medals on Sunday to conclude the third and final stop in the Mare Nostrum swimming tour.

Oleksiak, the quadruple Olympic medalist from Toronto, earned her victory in the 50-m butterfly in 26.06 seconds for her second straight win in the event on the Tour. Former world champion Jeannette Ottesen of Denmark was second in 26.21 and Beatrix Bordas of Hungary third in 26.51.

Ruck notched her second gold of the competition winning the women’s 200-m backstroke in 2:08.46. Phoebe Bacon of the U.S. followed for silver in 2:09.33 and Katinka Hosszu of Hungary was third in 2:10.81.

In the women’s 100-m freestyle Kayla Sanchez of Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre- Ontario added her second silver of the competition in 54.28 just behind Anna Hopkin of Britain first in 54.20. Rebecca Smith of Red Deer, Alta., was seventh.

On Saturday, Ruck triumphed in the 100 back, while silver medals were earned by Smith in the 100-m fly, Sanchez in the 200 free and Mack Darragh of Oakville, Ont.,  in the men’s 200-m butterfly.

The Canadians are tuning up for the FINA World Championships July 12-18 in Gwangju, South Korea.
