Swimming Canada now accepting applications for Tihanyi Bursary

News –

OTTAWA – Swimming Canada’s award committee is now accepting applications for this year’s Dr. Jeno Tihanyi Memorial Bursary award.

Every year the Tihanyi Bursary is awarded to a coach-swimmer tandem who is working together to achieve ambitious goals. The bursary acknowledges the potential for high performance through the financial support of training, competitive and professional development opportunities designed to advance the coach and athlete’s progress.

The fund is a legacy of Dr. Jeno “Doc” Tihanyi and his many accomplishments over his 51 years of coaching. Tihanyi was a Canadian coach well known for his coaching philosophy of pushing improvement over performance. He has been part of the successful development of many elite swimmers, including Olympic gold medallist, Alex Baumann.

Doc always demonstrated his ability to teach, coach, mentor, and lead. In his coaching he demonstrated purpose with every practice, set, training camp and program. The Dr. Jeno Tihanyi Bursary was established to remember Doc, his contribution to competitive swimming in Canada, and to encourage other coaches and swimmers to work closely together toward excellence.

Previous winners include, Cole Pratt and his coach Dave Johnson from Cascade Swim Club and Gabe Mastromatteo and his coach Janet Hyslop from the Kenora Swimming Sharks.

To apply for the bursary, coach-swimmer tandems must be registered with Swimming Canada, have achieved “On Track” times and demonstrate the potential for high performance.

Applications will be accepted between Aug. 31 and Oct. 15. The bursary’s value will be determined according to the number of applications received and the decision of the committee.

The members of the award committee include Mr. Andrey Tihanyi, Dr. Jeno Tihanyi’s son, Alex Baumman and National Development Coach, Ken McKinnon.
