Blog –

Have you ever been curious what TV shows or movies our national team swimmers watch when they aren’t training? Our new series will highlight what swimmers are watching, playing and reading. Scroll down to see what Tristan Cote, Abi Tripp and Kyla Leibel have just finished watching on Netflix.

Tristan Cote

Cote is a senior national team member and was part of the Gwangju 2019 FINA World Championships team last summer. He also competed at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships and 2018 Commonwealth Games.

What TV show is he watching?

The Last Dance

Cote has recently finished watching the Netflix documentary series on NBA basketball player Michael Jordan. What did Cote think about the series?

“The show follows Michael Jordan’s years while playing for the Chicago Bulls until 1998. Through behind the scenes clips as well as a full-fledged camera crew in his final year with the team, which they named “The Last Dance”, the show documents Jordan’s mentality and approach to the game. I found the show particularly interesting as it demonstrates the work ethic and drive Michael had on and off the court. As mentioned by teammates, Jordan played without remorse for others while finding ways to continuously motivate himself beyond what was understood as capable. I strongly connected to his sense of competitiveness as everything in life is a competition to him. I often feel I am the same way. In addition to showing his mental side of the game, the documentary demonstrates that although Michael and the Bulls achieved greatness, it wasn’t an easy path to success. The documentary deeply dives into the teams struggles and personal issues, demonstrating that the road to success often times has bumps along the way.” – Tristan Cote

Abi Tripp

Tripp is a Paralympic finalist and earned a bronze medal at the 2019 World Para Swimming Championships in the 4×100-m freestyle relay. She also brought home a bronze medal in the S8 50-m freestyle at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

What TV show is she watching?

Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame C.J. Walker

Tripp recently watched the Netflix limited series that explores the life of the first African American self-made millionaire. Here is what Tripp had to say about the show.

“The Netflix mini-series, Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madame C.J. Walker, is an incredible story of tenacity, heartbreak, and vigour. Madame C.J. Walker stood out from the crowd as she built herself into an influential Black entrepreneur who became the first self-made female millionaire in the United States. I loved the stories shared, especially Madame C.J. Walker’s experience of being a washerwoman in 1908 and learning some of the hurdles she negotiated to start her own company. Her business eventually blossomed into a nationwide company in the US. Starring Octavia Spenser, the show is full of emotion and the frustrations and triumphs that Madame C.J. Walker and her family embraced as they worked their way to the top of the haircare industry. The four-episode series will tell you the story of Madame C.J. Walker’s fight to the top of American enterprise.” – Abi Tripp

Kyla Leibel

Leibel is a Senior National team member and was part of the Lima 2019 Pan American Games team last summer. She also competed at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships.

What TV show is she watching?

Outer Banks

Leibel has recently binge watched the new Netflix original show Outer Banks. Here is what she had to say about the new action-adventure mystery show.

“In my opinion Outer Banks could be described as a modern day Goonies. It’s a mixture of adventure, mystery and teenage drama. Outer Banks centres around a teenage boy named John B, who lives in the Outer Banks of North Carolina. John B’s Dad mysteriously disappeared months before and when John B and his friends find a boat off the coast of the town they are sent full force into solving a crazy mystery. They end up discovering secrets about the town and the people that surround them, while also having fun, falling in love and getting involved in crazy teenage drama. I binged watched this show and finished all ten episodes in one day. I loved this show because you will always be on your toes. There are so many plot twists and surprises jam packed into the show that you will never be bored. You will be guaranteed to fall in love with the characters’ personalities and sad that season 2 is not out yet.” – Kyla Leibel
