World champion Summer McIntosh set the table for another great year as she broke her Canadian senior and world junior record in the women’s 200-m butterfly on Thursday at the 2023 Pro Swim Series competition.

McIntosh, 16, clocked 2:05.05, breaking her previous best of 2:05.20 set in a golden performance at the FINA world Championships last June. Bella Sims of the U.S. was second in 2:09.09 and Maria Jose Mata Cocco of Mexico was third in 2:11.00.

‘’Overall I’m really happy with my race,’’ said McIntosh. ‘’There’s always things to learn. My split times were different than usual, so obviously I need to fix that in training. But a PB is a PB and hopefully I can gain more extra milliseconds next time.’’

Kamryn Cannings of Calgary was fifth in a personal best 2:13.33.

Montreal native Ilya Kharun broke the Canadian record in the men’s 200-m fly clocking 1:54.49. That eclipsed the previous mark of 1:56.27 set by Mack Darragh in 2018.

McIntosh was also fifth earlier in the 100-m freestyle in a personal best 54.54. Other Canadian women’s results, Sophie Angus was fourth in the 100-m breaststroke in 1:08.08 and her High Performance Centre – Ontario teammate Ella Jansen was fifth in the 400-m free in 4:07.18, smashing her personal best by over three seconds.

On the men’s side, Javier Acevedo took fifth in the 50-m backstroke in 25.78 and Finlay Knox was sixth in the 100-m breaststroke in 1:01.29. Both Olympians are based at Swimming Canada’s High Performance Centre – Ontario.

‘’The 100 breast is not an event I do at all so I’m just learning each time I swim it,’’ said Knox. ‘’Obviously being a 200 individual medley swimmer, I need to work on every single stroke so improving the breaststroke has been a focus this year.’’
