Jonathan’s Bio

  • At the 2017 Para-swimming Canadian Open, Dieleman broke the Canadian record in the 150-m individual medley.
  • At the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games, Dieleman was focused on the 50-m breaststroke. He made it to the finals in the event where he finished 5th in Canadian record time.
  • Set a Canadian and Americas record in the S3 50-m breaststroke at the 2016 Olympic & Para-swimming Trials, qualifying for his first Paralympic Games by posting a time that ranked fourth in the world. He also won the multi-class 150-m individual medley.
  • Won a silver medal in the 50-m breaststroke at the Parapan Am Games, his first major international competition. He also set a Canadian record.
  • Qualified for his first major international Para-swimming event by making the Toronto 2015 Parapan Am Games team.
  • A T4 paraplegic, Dieleman won the 50-metre breaststroke and SM4 150-m individual medley at the 2015 Speedo Can Am Para-swimming Championships.
  • Dieleman grew up on a farm, was involved in 4-H and played guitar since he was 13.
  • A rodeo fan, he rode bareback and bulls before breaking his back in a dirt biking accident in 2010.
  • Dieleman was four years old when he first learned to swim in a lake near his home.
  • He returned to the pool about six months after his accident.
  • Besides swimming Dieleman also competes in Para- triathlon.
