BUDAPEST, Hungary – Canada’s 4×100-metre medley relay will be looking for the podium in tonight’s finals at the FINA World Championships in Budapest.
The team of Kylie Masse, Kierra Smith, Rebecca Smith and Sandrine Mainville qualified third after swimming the relay in 3 minutes, 57.17 seconds.
“It was super fun. It’s the first time the four of us swam together. We really just tried to get pumped up this morning and swim as fast as we could,” said Masse, who set a world record in the 100-m backstroke on Tuesday. “We’re hoping to get on the podium and have some good swims tonight.”
Sydney Pickrem will be looking for redemption in the 400-m individual medley tonight. Pickrem stopped after 50 m during Monday’s 200-m IM after taking on water during the butterfly leg. The 20-year-old is going into tonight’s finals fourth after a 4:36.25 in prelims.
“I’ve been moving forward and trying to get to a better mindset and see that my year isn’t gone by that one swim,” she said. “The more I’m swimming the more confident I’m getting. Whatever happens, happens, all I can do is try to do my best race.”
They will join Rachel Nicol of Lethbridge, Alta., in the final session. The 24-year-old from LA Swim Club sits eighth in the women’s 50-m breaststroke.
