TAIPEI, Taiwan – Team Canada improved their qualifying time and finished seventh in the final of the men’s 4×200-metre freestyle relay at the FISU Summer Universiade in Taiwan, Taipei.

The 4×200-m freestyle relay featuring a Canadian team of Jeremy Bagshaw, Markus Thormeyer, Tristan Cote and Luke Reilly, posted a time of 7 minutes 22.89 seconds. Although they landed outside of the medals, the team understands the relay is a work in progress.

“As a team, we’re satisfied with our results. We improved our time from this morning and we stayed similar placing. As a team, to improve our time is all we can ask for,” said Bagshaw, the High Performance Centre – Victoria swimmer. “I’m sure some of us wanted to be a little faster, but this is a good building block for the next three years. We want to try to get this relay going to hopefully make the finals in three years, that’s the bigger goal for the future.”

Thormeyer also weighed in on his team’s performance.

“I was pretty happy with our performance as a team because we had guys that don’t normally do the 200 free step up and perform the best they ever had and as a team we improved from this morning, so that was really good as well,” said the HPC-Vancouver swimmer from Delta, B.C., “For my individual result, I’m not where I want to be at but seeing all the things I need to work on here have been highlighted over the whole summer. It’s getting me ready for next year because I know I can be so much better than what I’ve done. I’m just happy with the result as a team but there’s more I need to work on.”

Katerine Savard of the Club Aquatique Montréal finished sixth in the women’s 200-m freestyle final with a time of 1:59.21. Savard started strong and held a slight lead on the field at the halfway point of the race. In the final 100 metres, China’s Siobhan Haughey overtook and maintained that lead on her way to the gold medal and a Universiade record of 1:56.71.

Two Canadian teammates swam side-by-side in the first semifinal of the women’s 50-m breaststroke. University of Manitoba Bisons’ Kelsey Wog touched the wall in 32.28 to finish 13^th while Perth Stingrays Athletic Club’s Bailey Andison placed 15^th in 32.48.

Newmarket, Ont., native Danielle Hanus was back in action on Friday in the women’s 200-m butterfly seminfinal. The High Performance Centre – Victoria swimmer clocked in at 2:13.49 and finished 13^th.

Representing the Toronto Swim Club, Alex Loginov competed in the men’s 50-m freestyle semifinals where he placed 16^th with a time of 22.59.
