Fifth place finish for women’s relay at Summer Universiade

FISU Summer Universiade 2017 –

TAIPEI – Taiwan – Team Canada’s women’s 4×100-m medley relay team finished fifth on the final day of the pool portion of the competition at the FISU Summer Universiade in Taipei, Taiwan.

Alexia Zevnik, Kelsey Wog, Katerine Savard and Jacqueline Keire formed the women’s 4×100-m medley relay team in Saturday’s relay event that posted a time of 4 minutes 03.99 seconds, an improvement on their qualifying time.

In the preliminaries, Team Canada finished second to the Australian team in Heat 2 with a time of 4:07.08, and qualifying for the final as the fifth fastest time.

“The relay tonight, everyone individually handled their job, we just had some really good competition. But as a team, I think we’re able to build on that especially in future meets and in 2020,” said Keire, the swimmer from the Oakville Aquatic Club. “Taipei as a whole was really good. We had some high swims and we had some low swims but as a team I think we pulled through and we should definitely be proud of ourselves.”

Kennedy Goss was Canada’s only other competitor in Saturday’s finals as she swam in the women’s 400-m freestyle final. Toronto’s Goss placed eighth in the event with a time of 4:13.88.

“I’m pretty disappointed with my race, it’s way off my best time and I thought I could do a lot better but it is the last session of a very long season so I’m excited for a little break and then to get back to training and to train hard for Canada,” Goss said.

The gold medal for the women’s 400 free went to Germany’s Sarah Koehler who set a new Universiade Record with a time of 4:03.96.

Despite feeling disappointment over her last performance, Goss reflects positively on her experience at the Summer Universiade as she leaves Taiwan with a gold medal from the women’s 4×100-m freestyle relay on the first day of competition.

“My experience in Taipei has been wonderful, it has been a little hot but all the staff and everyone’s who has organized the event has done an amazing job,” said Goss. “I’ve never been to Games like these and it really has outdone itself. They really proved that Taipei is a great city and they really showed a great appreciation for us.”
