INDIANAPOLIS – The Canadian record book has been partially re-written after five more records were broken on the last two nights of the 2022 FINA Swimming World Cup. Javier Acevedo of Toronto and Ilya Kharun both broke two records each, while Summer McIntosh of Toronto broke her previous record in the women’s 800-m freestyle.

Acevedo lowered his own records in the 100-m and 50-m backstrokes in 49.71 and 23.20 to place fourth and sixth in the two events. Acevedo now has all three short course backstroke records after breaking the 200-m backstroke Thursday.

Kharun placed third in the 200-m butterfly in a time of 1:51.70 and fourth in the 50-m butterfly in 22.47.

McIntosh captured silver in the 800-m freestyle in a time of 8:07.12. Katie Ledecky of the United States won the event in a world record time of 7:57.42. Teammate Leah Smith came third in 8:12.01.

Several Canadians also made the podium. Sydney Pickrem of Toronto won the women’s 400-m individual medley in 4:26.66. She followed that performance with a second-place finish in the 200-m individual medley in 2:05.87.

Following the 400-m race, Pickrem reflected on the chance to once again compete against a strong field of IMers.

“Obviously I knew at the end I had to get as far as I could on the breaststroke,” Pickrem said. “A year ago I couldn’t even step on the blocks and do a 400 IM because of challenges, anxiety and mental health issues. I just feel really happy to be here and doing a battle and getting training like that with these girls pushing you is just unbelievable.”

Bailey Andison of Smith Falls, Ont. earned bronze in the 400-m individual medley in 4:31.30. Andison finished seventh in the 200-m event in 2:08.94, just behind Kelsey Wog of Winnipeg in 2:08.54.

Canadian dominance in the IM events continued on the men’s side. Finlay Knox of Okotoks, Alta. placed second in the 400-m IM in 4:07.09 after swimming faster in the morning than the top finals heat. He finished third in the 200-m IM in 1:54.03.

In the 100-m backstroke, Ingrid Wilm of Calgary placed third in a time of 56.00. Kylie Masse of Toronto touched fourth in 56.13.

Masse out-touched Wilm in the 200-m backstroke for fourth in 2:02.41. Wilm touched fifth in 2:03.03.

Other notable results include McIntosh fifth in the 200-m freestyle in 1:52.63, Mary-Sophie Harvey of Trois-Rivières, Que. eighth in the 100-m backstroke in 58.88, Pickrem sixth in the 100-m breaststroke in 1:05.66, Sophie Angus eighth in the 100-m breaststroke in 1:06.83 and sixth in the 50-m breaststroke in 30.94.
