Record night for McIntosh at 2023 Toyota US Open Championships

GREENSBORO, North Carolina – Summer McIntosh of Toronto kicked off the second night of the 2023 Toyota U.S. Open Championships with both a pool and competition record in the women’s 400-m freestyle.

The 17-year-old, who trains in Florida with the Sarasota Sharks, led the stacked field from start to finish. Her 200-m time of 1:57.52 put her just 0.58 seconds over the world record split of 1:56.94. McIntosh dropped just over seven seconds from her prelims swim to finish first in 3:59.42.

American Katie Ledecky touched second in 4:02.38, followed by Siobhan Haughey of Hong Kong in 4:06.32.

McIntosh’s next race is the 400-m individual medley Friday.

Meanwhile, fellow Torontonian Joshua Liendo placed second in the 50-m freestyle in 21.90. American Michael Andrew won the event in 21.80. Mikel Schreuders of Aruba was third in 21.93.

In a time of 2:10.67, Mary-Sophie Harvey of Montreal’s CAMO club finished sixth in the women’s 200-m individual medley. Ashley McMillan of the High Performance Centre-Ontario placed eighth in 2:13.09.

In the men’s 400-m freestyle, Liendo’s University of Florida teammate Eric Brown of Pointe-Claire, Que., was sixth in the 800-m freestyle Wednesday in a time of 8:01.35.

Ella Jansen of HPC-Ontario was Canada’s only other athlete in Wednesday’s distance events, finishing the women’s 800-m freestyle in seventh in 8:40.14.

This year’s Toyota US Open is hosting 845 athletes from around the world at the Greensboro Aquatic Centre. Prelims start at 9 a.m. EST and finals at 6 p.m. EST.
