KAZAN, Russia – Three Canadian women will swim for medals Monday at FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia, and three others will compete in semifinals.

Canada moved three women through the morning heats on Day 2 at Kazan Arena.

In the women’s 100-m breaststroke, Pan Am Games medallist Rachel Nicol of Lethbridge, Alta., moved on to semis with a heat swim of 1:07.52, good for 14th spot. Nicol won a bronze medal in the event at Pan Ams with a personal best of 1:07.10. Kierra Smith of Kelowna, B.C., won her heat in a lifetime best of 1:07.88, but ended up 21st.

Dominique Bouchard of North Bay, Ont., advanced to the semifinal in the women’s 100-m backstroke with a time of 1:00.61, tying her for 15th. Hilary Caldwell of White Rock, B.C., missed 16th place by 0.08 seconds with a heat time of 1:00.69 to finish 18th but, due to other swimmers scratching, ended up in the semifinal as well.

Meanwhile, three Canadian women who qualified through Sunday’s semifinals will compete in finals tonight with medals on the line. Sydney Pickrem broke her own national 200-m individual medley record twice Sunday, as her semifinal time of 2:10.08 moved her into Monday’s final in fifth position. Meanwhile, Montreal’s Katerine Savard and Noemie Thomas of Richmond, B.C., will be in action in the 100-m butterfly final. Savard, the national record holder at 57.27, sits fourth with a semi time of 57.52, while Thomas moved on in eighth at 58.05.

In other morning swims, Jeremy Bagshaw of Victoria’s Island Swimming was 24th in men’s 200-m freestyle at 1:48.29. Calgary’s Russell Wood finished 29th in the men’s 100-m backstroke (54.90).
