Kisil and Liendo advance to 100 free semis at Olympic Games

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games –

TOKYO – Yuri Kisil and Joshua Liendo from the High Performance Centre – Ontario in Toronto advanced to the semifinals in the men’s 100-m freestyle in a light heats schedule for Canadian swimmers at the Olympic Games on Tuesday night.

Kisil, racing at his second Games, was third in his heat and ranked 10th overall in a personal best 48.15 while Liendo, an Olympic rookie, notched the 14th best time in 48.34 for fourth in his heat. The top-16 advanced to the semis.

“I just basically tried to execute my race strategy,” said Kisil. “My relay and time this morning show that I have more that I can improve upon and be faster in the semis.”

Both Liendo and Kisil were part of Canada’s 4X100-m freestyle relay which placed fourth on Monday.

“I was focused on having a good start and have a go on the first 50,” said the 18-year-old Liendo. “I would have liked to bring it back better on the second 50 but I’m happy with the way I executed it. It was really great to have that first relay to start to have a chance to go through it.”

For those looking for Canadian record holder Brent Hayden, the 2012 Olympic bronze medallist who returned after a seven-year hiatus, his next scheduled race is Friday in the men’s 50 free.

The 100 semis are Wednesday morning in Tokyo (Tuesday night in Canada). Other Canadians in action are Penny Oleksiak in the women’s 200-m freestyle final and Sydney Pickrem in the women’s 200-m individual medley final. Action starts tonight at 9:30 p.m. (ET)
