Joshua’s Bio

  • At the 2023 World Aquatics Championships, Josh Liendo was the only Canadian
  • Was part of the 4×100-metre freestyle relay that finished fifth and the 4x100m mixed medley relay that finished sixth. Liendo also made the semifinals in the 50-metre freestyle, finishing eighth and 100-metre freestyle, finishing 14th.
  • Joshua Liendo became the first Black Canadian swimmer to win a gold medal and a medal in an individual event for Canada at the 2021 FINA World Championships (25m). Liendo won gold and broke the Canadian record as a member of the mixed 4×50-m freestyle relay team. Liendo earned bronze in the 50-m and 100-m freestyle, breaking the Canadian record in the 50-m freestyle. He also broke the Canadian record and finished 14th in the 100-m butterfly. He was also tied for fourth-fastest in the 50-m butterfly heats but scratched out of the semifinals to focus on the 50 free final.
  • Liendo broke the men’s 50-m and 100-m butterfly records at the 2023 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials.
  • In his freshman year with the Florida Gators, Liendo won three individual medals at NCAA Championships including a silver in the men’s 50 free with a time of 18.40 making him the fastest freshman in NCAA history. He also took silver in 100 fly and was NCAA champion in the 100 free.
  • At the 2022 FINA World Championships in Budapest, Liendo captured bronze in the 100-m freestyle and in the 100-m butterfly. He broke the Canadian record in the 50-m freestyle and finished fifth. Liendo was also part of the mixed 4×100-m freestyle relay team that captured silver and broke the Canadian record. He was a member of the men’s 4×100-m freestyle relay team that finished sixth and the men’s 4×100-m medley relay team that finished 11th.
  • At the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Liendo won gold in the 100-m butterfly and earned bronze in the 50-m freestyle. He was also a member of the 4×100-m freestyle relay and the mixed 4×100-m freestyle relay that took home bronze. Liendo placed 6th in the 50-m butterfly and 7th in the 100-m freestyle.
  • At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, Liendo was a part of the men’s 4×100-m freestyle relay that broke the Canadian record and finished fourth. He also swam the butterfly leg of the men’s 4×100-m medley relay that placed seventh. Individually, Liendo finished 11th in the 100-m butterfly, 14th in the 100-m freestyle and 18th in the 50-m freestyle at his first Olympics.
  • At the 2022 Bell Canadian Swimming Trials, Liendo broke Brent Hayden’s 13-year-old Canadian record in the 50-m freestyle. Liendo also broke the Canadian record in the 100-m butterfly. His performances qualified him for both the 2022 FINA World Championships and the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
  • At the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Trials, Liendo won gold in the 100-m butterfly, breaking the Canadian record in the preliminaries, and won gold in the 100-m freestyle. He also finished second in the 50-m freestyle. His performance qualified him for his first Olympic Games.
  • Liendo was a member of the men’s 4×100-m medley that finished 10th at the Gwangju 2019 FINA World Championships. Individually, Liendo finished 44th in the 50-m butterfly.
  • At the Budapest 2019 FINA World Junior Championships, Liendo lowered his Canadian age group record to earn silver in the 100-m freestyle. He was also a member of the mixed 4×100-m medley and the men’s 4×100-m medley that brought home bronze medals.
  • At the 2019 Canadian Swimming Trials in Toronto, Liendo qualified for the 2019 FINA World Championships, his first senior national team, by finishing second and breaking the 15-17 age group record in the 100-m butterfly. He went on to lower that record at the Eastern Canadian Championships the following week in Quebec City.
  • He also finished fourth in the 50-m freestyle and fifth in the 100-m free at Trials, in age group record times.
  • Liendo won Swimming Canada’s Male Junior Swimmer of the Year in 2019 and 2021.
  • At the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Fiji, Liendo was a part of the men’s 4×100-m medley team that earned bronze. Individually, Liendo finished fourth and fifth in the 100-m butterfly and 50-m freestyle.
